Difference Between Modems and Routers

Your modem acts as the bridge between your LAN (local area network) and the Internet.

Your router, on the other hand, creates a network between the computers and other internet connected devices in your home.

How Much Bandwidth Do We Really Need?

Determining how much Internet speed you need is a straightforward calculation that involves several factors. How many users will you have, what on-line activities will they engage in, how much bandwidth is necessary for those activities, and how many of those users will be using the Internet simultaneously? The hardest part may be figuring out how much bandwidth each activity actually uses.

You will also have to consider the other devices in your home that connect to the Internet and how they use those connections, such as TV receivers, smart appliances and more.

Phishing Email Warning

We have started receiving calls and emails from our customers regarding an email that was sent to them asking the customer to sign into their account. This is a phishing email and they are trying to gain access to your information. If you look at the email address that the email is from it should be general@wtccommunications.com. If not, delete it right away. And even if it is the WTC email address check the body of the email carefully. We will never ask you to give any information via email.

Should you receive these types of emails in the future please call 563-732-3000 or 877-794-5866 to verify if it is from us or not. Our Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) are happy to take your call to help you avoid clicking on one of these emails and becoming infected with a virus or other computer problem that could harm your computer and our network.

Important Email & Internet Updates

In early November, our email partner announced that there would be updates implemented to the email platform used for @netwtc.net and hosted domain email services offered through our company. This update took place December 6, 2016 between midnight and 7 a.m. According to the original announcement, you were told that you did not need to update your e-mail configurations. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

The upgrade does require you to make changes. Specifically:

  • You’ll need to update your username entry in the email programs you use to use your full email address like: username@netwtc.net instead of just username.
  • You will also need to re-enter your email password. Also, there appear to be some legacy SSL settings set up on some customer’s computers that are preventing access, the solution for this seems to be to recreate the account in Outlook if they’re using IMAP.
  • If they’re using POP3 they will need to save their messages before doing this because the messages are saved on the computer.

Email is accessible via our webmail interface if you’d like to use that until the Tech Support Queue settles down. The address for that is https://webmail.netwtc.net

If you have an Android device, you may not be able to change the username setting to include @netwtc.net. In those situations, you will need to delete the account and then re-add it to your phone. In some instances, particularly on mobile devices, an additional change may be needed. You can find the steps to change email authentication from ‘MD5’ to ‘Password’ for iOS devices here.

We apologize for any inconvenience this email upgrade may have caused for you. We are working with our vendor to identify steps that can be taken to help reduce issues during future upgrades. Online Phone Directory

We are continuously looking for new ways to make things easier for our customers, and for ways to keep our website up-to-date and relevant. With that in mind, we have added Directory links so you can view our directory online. You can click on the links at the top of the page and go to the White pages of the directory or to the yellow pages.

There is a search engine at the top of the page. The business category pops up automatically but if you are looking for residential listings, just click on the window logo and you can choose “Business”, “Residential”, or “Reverse”. Reverse will let you enter a phone number and find who that phone number is listed to. (if the number is unpublished it will not show up on this search engine)

Give the new links a try and let us know what you think about the online directory. You can search for categories (restaurants, churches, service providers, etc.) or you can search by name.

We hope you enjoy the new links and appreciate hearing any comments you might have on this, or any other part of the website.

Be sure to check back frequently.
